Berlin Memorial Plaques
Insights into Berlin's culture of remembrance

There are over 3000 memorial plaques and commemorative signs in Berlin. They commemorate Nazi Germany, the Berlin Wall and famous personalities of the city's history. Together, they shape Berlin's culture of remembrance.

Through a scrollytelling website, the project shows the strong imprint of National Socialism on the city, the low representation of women in the culture of remembrance, as well as the city's strong relation to soccer and other insights. A data visualization serves as an interactive interface to show the entirety of the plaques. Also, each plaque can be explored further at any time in the story.
